My New Custom Coolant Recovery Tank.
« on: August 03, 2014, 05:51:28 pm »
For some reason my bikes airbox & the plastic around it are dried out & brittle, including my coolant recovery tank. It had a hole in it just above the low water line & leaked. I removed the coolant recovery tank from my parts bike, only to find out that it was about in the same condition.

So... I had to improvise for a while & here was my solution.

Yes that is a pill bottle. :-[ ;D Hey it works.

I've been looking for a suitable replacement for a while. I was about to approach one of the local fabricators to see what it would cost to make a small aluminum or stainless tank.

Recently there was a question on one of the forums about auxilary fuel tanks & I remembered a company that I had found a few years back. While I was checking their web-site I found this little fuel catch can: http://tourtank.com
Finally I had found my new coolant recovery tank. I know that $30 seems pretty steep for a coolant recovery tank, but I doubt that I could have one made for that price.

It arrived yesterday & took a matter of minutes to install. Usually I'm not a big fan of using hose clamps to attach accessories, but it has to be better than zip-ties. Just be carefull of the ends once you snap off the excess.

How does the bottle vent?

Can you see the 90 degree elbow near the top of the bottle in the middle set of pictures? That is the vent or the overflow line that I ran out the bottom of the bike. What's not shown in those pics, is that there is a threaded hole in the middle of the top. The OEM overflow tube fits snugly into that hole & down to the bottom of the bottle. I wish there was a sight glass or level indicator on the bottle, but will just have to do without.

So... I take it that you think it's an improvement over my pill bottle? LOL!
