Steering stem bearing replacement - anyone use Alls Balls?
« on: June 10, 2014, 03:54:44 pm »
The kit comes with washers but I can't determine if I need them or if so which one. My stock bearings were tossed...

I have used an All Balls steering bearing kit before, but it was on a different bike. I have not seen the Ascot kit. Are there any instructions included? If so, what does it have to say?

You can most likely determine what spacer to use by "mocking up" the front end a couple of times to see which set up works best.

I wasn't happy to learn that the All Balls bearings were made in China.

Sorry I can't be of more help. Hopefully someone else will chime in.

Good luck
J.

PS. Let this be a lesson to you. Don't throw away the old part until the new part has been installed. I've done it myself before.  :-[

If you've not sorted this yet, I can confirm you do need the spacer. I was in the same position as you without the old balls to measure against but the guys at their helpline were really useful. The actual reply was "Please install the thin washer under the lower bearing 99% of the time this is correct." - for an FT I can guarantee that is 100% correct!
good luck
